Kamakhya Temple:

Kamakhya-Devi-Temple

The most important Hindu Pilgrimage in Assam is the Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal  Hills in the western part of Guwahati (Assam). A 3km winding road takes the devotee up to the temple complex, where the Mother Goddess is worshipped in the Yoni from inside the Sanctorum. That is a cave with rock stairs. Of several legends and myths that tell the story of the temple, the most important is that, the king Daksha and his son-in-law, the great Siva. Daksha’s daughter, Sati had married Siva against her father's wish, which greatly angered him. He, therefore, once invited all the Gods, excepted Siva and his consort, Sati, for a yagna, Humiliated by the insult meted out to her husband, Sati plunged into the sacrificial fire of the yagna and immolated herself. Overcome with sorrow, Siva held her charred body and broke into the tandava nritya, the dance of destruction, annihilating everything in his way. Lord Siva had he been allowed to continue his dance of death with the body of his beloved on his shoulders, Vishnu, the Supreme God, come to the aid of the universe by using his Sudarshan Chakra ( the holy disc) to cut the body of Parvati (Sati) into pieces, thereby bringing a calming effect on Siva. As Siva carried Parvati’s body hither organ fell on the Nilachal Hills or Neel Parvat turning it blue. This hill, representing the body of Siva, is believed to have special powers associated with energy and creation. According to the Kalika Purana denotes the spot where the Sati used to retire in secret to satisfy her armour with Siva. The Goddess was thereafter named Kamakhya. Thus the derivation of the Kalika Purana makes the mountain both, a graveyard and a secret love-tryst of the Goddess. The Yogini Tantra, however, takes no notice of this myth and holds a different view that lays stress on the creative symbolism of the Yoni, from the fact that the original temple had been built by Kamadeva, who had turned to ashes by Siva for disturbing his meditation and that he was brought back to life only after he had promised to build a temple on the spot where Sati’s yoni had fallen

The Ambubachi Festival:

The four-day-long festival of Ambubachi is the most popular festival held in the Kamakhya temple complex.  During this period the temple remains closed for worship as the Mother Goddess is supposed to be menstruating. Held towards the last part of June each year, this festival symbolizes the harmony between the reproductive female body and the cycles of nature.
